Mercedes-Benz GLE

2026-09-24 17:20:00

Model Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLE is a core mid-to-large luxury SUV in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, positioned between the GLC and GLS, and sold in the domestic market as a fully imported model. The current-generation GLE (chassis code V167) debuted in 2018 and received its mid-cycle facelift in 2023. On 17 April 2026, the 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE was officially launched. The new model is available in three variants: GLE 350 4MATIC Fashion Edition, GLE 450 4MATIC Fashion Edition, and GLE 450 4MATIC Luxury Edition, with official retail prices ranging from RM748,800 to RM889,800. Additionally, the 2026 GLE 350 4MATIC Dynamic Edition remains on sale at RM699,800. As the backbone of the Mercedes-Benz SUV portfolio, the GLE competes directly against mid-to-large luxury SUV rivals such as the BMW X5 and Audi Q7. According to official plans, Beijing Benz will begin local production of the long-wheelbase GLE in mid-2026.

Design Language

The 2026 GLE retains the signature Mercedes-Benz family design language. Up front, it features a starry pin-matrix radiator grille accented with intricate three-pointed star motifs and a prominent central logo, paired with extensive chrome trim for an upscale look. The headlamp assemblies sport a clean profile, housing integrated LED high/low beams and daytime running lights. Its side profile is instantly recognisable, defined by the forward-slanted C-pillar creating an independent rear quarter glass section, accentuated by chrome window surrounds. At the rear, parallelogram-shaped LED tail lamp clusters are linked by a horizontal chrome strip. In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,927 mm in length, 2,018 mm in width, and 1,782 mm in height, with a 2,995 mm wheelbase. For 2026, the overall height has been lowered by 15 mm (from 1,797 mm to 1,782 mm), while the approach angle has improved from 21.3° to 25° and the departure angle from 24.4° to 27.3°, delivering enhanced off-road clearance.

Inside, the GLE features a layered dashboard layout, where contrasting trim materials create a rich visual depth, complemented by wood trim inserts and a 64-colour ambient lighting system. The cockpit is dominated by dual 12.3-inch widescreen displays. A dedicated row of physical switchgear is retained below the centre console for quick, intuitive access while driving.

Powertrain and Performance

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLE comes standard across the range with a 48V mild-hybrid system paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission (9G-TRONIC), offering two powertrain options. The GLE 350 series is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four engine producing 190 kW (258 hp) and 400 Nm of torque, achieving 0–100 km/h in 7.3 seconds with a top speed of 218 km/h. The GLE 450 series packs a 2.5-litre turbocharged inline-six engine delivering 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque, dispatching the 0–100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds on to a top speed of 250 km/h. Under WLTC testing, combined fuel consumption is rated at 8.5 L/100 km for the GLE 350 series and 9.9 L/100 km for the GLE 450 series. Fuel tank capacity stands at 85 litres. The 48V mild-hybrid setup features an Integrated Starter-Generator (ISG) that provides supplementary torque off the line, ensuring seamless power delivery.

Chassis and Dynamics

Underneath, the GLE rides on a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension setup. The brand's 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive system is standard across the board, providing a default 45:55 front-to-rear torque split under normal driving conditions. A multi-plate clutch centre differential distributes torque dynamically between the axles during wheel slip, while electronic cross-axle traction control brakes slipping wheels to channel power to wheels with grip. Apart from the GLE 350 Dynamic Edition, all variants feature air suspension with adaptive damping and ride-height adjustment. In terms of rolling stock, the GLE 350 and GLE 450 Fashion Editions ride on 275/50 R20 tyres, whereas the Luxury Edition upgrades to a staggered setup with 275/45 R21 front and 315/40 R21 rear tyres. Additional driving aids include Hill Start Assist, Downhill Speed Regulation (DSR), and a transparent underbody camera view.

Cabin and Equipment

The 2026 GLE benefits from substantial standard equipment upgrades across the line-up. The GLE 350 Fashion Edition now includes front-seat ventilation and a Burmester premium audio system (previously optional extras valued at around RM23,000) as standard fitment. The GLE 450 Fashion Edition adds standard front-seat ventilation, while the GLE 450 Luxury Edition gains a built-in dashcam and AR augmented-reality navigation.

On the connectivity front, all variants come standard with a 12.3-inch central touchscreen running the MBUX multimedia system, which supports GPS navigation, multimedia streaming, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto smartphone integration, 4G telematics, and over-the-air (OTA) software updates. The driver’s side also features continuous voice command recognition. Audio is handled by a standard 13-speaker Burmester surround sound system. The steering wheel is wrapped in Nappa leather with multifunction controls. Power seat adjustment functions remain consistent across all three variants, with both front seats offering multi-way electric adjustment, extendable thigh support, and lumbar adjustment, along with standard heating and ventilation. A 64-colour ambient lighting system is also standard. Boot space is rated at 825 litres in standard configuration, expandable to 2,055 litres with the rear bench folded flat.

Safety and Driver Assistance

On the safety front, the 2026 GLE comes standard with 8 airbags (including dual front, front side, front and rear curtain, driver's knee, and front centre airbags). Active safety equipment includes Blind Spot Assist, Active Brake Assist, Forward/Rear Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Attention Assist, Exit Warning Assist, Roll Stability Control, and Emergency Call services. A comprehensive Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assistance package comes standard, encompassing full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Lane Change Assist, Active Parking Assist, and Navigation-assisted Driving. Drivers also benefit from an intelligent 360-degree parking camera with a real-time off-road transparent bonnet view.

Market Performance and Verdict

The Mercedes-Benz GLE registered total sales of 34,025 units across 2025, wrapping up the year with 3,161 units delivered in December 2025 alone. In its segment, the GLE remains hot on the heels of the locally produced BMW X5, sustaining steady monthly volumes above 3,000 units. The 2026 model sharpens its competitive edge through a "more kit at no extra cost" product strategy. Industry reviews highlight the GLE's enduring appeal in its prestigious Three-Pointed Star badge, exceptional ride refinement, and hallmark Mercedes luxury ambiance. The 2026 updates effectively plug previous equipment gaps in entry-level trims. On the flip side, compared to homegrown high-end SUV offerings in the same price bracket, the GLE lags slightly in terms of advanced autonomous features and smart infotainment tech. With the locally assembled long-wheelbase GLE scheduled to enter production in mid-2026, a direct showdown against the locally built BMW X5L will likely reshape the premium mid-to-large SUV market landscape.
